Ceramic Glazed Floor Tiles

Floor tiles are commonly made from ceramic or stone, though modern technology also offers glass tiles for floors as well. Ceramic tiles can be painted and glazed. Small mosaic tiles can be laid in different patterns. Floor tiles are normally set into mortar consisting of sand, cement and sometimes a latex additive for extra bonding.

Polished porcelain floor tiles

Porcelain tiles are produced by a different method from normal ceramic tiles.Instead of the glaze being applied to a ceramic base tile the glaze is blended with the clay that forms the tile.This porcelain clay "body" is then pressed at extreme pressure to form the tile in a highly sophisticated hydraulic pressing machine.

Porcelain tiles

Tile terminology can be confusing. Most types of tiles that are made from clay or a mixture of clay and other materials, then kiln-fired, are considered to be a part of the larger classification called “Ceramic Tiles”. These tiles can be split into two groups, porcelain tiles and non-porcelain tiles. These non-porcelain tiles are frequently referred to as ceramic tiles by themselves, separate from porcelain tiles.

Roof tiles are designed mainly to keep out rain, and are traditionally made from locally available materials such as clay or slate. Modern materials such as concrete and plastic are also used and some clay tiles have a waterproof glaze.
